Kishore Jena, the state’s top javelin thrower, would receive a reward of Rs. 25 lakh, according to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who made the announcement on Monday. Jena is the first athlete from the state to advance to the World Athletics Championship final in Budapest, Hungary.
In the contest won by fellow countryman Neeraj Chopra, who became the first Indian to win a gold medal in the World Championship, Jena earned a commendable fifth-place result. Chopra’s throw of 88.17 metres earned him the gold.
With a throw that covered a distance of 84.77 metres, Jena set a new personal record, underscoring his outstanding performance on the international scene.
The state of Odisha stated in a release on Monday that Jena’s participation is a tremendous achievement for the athlete and a historic accomplishment in the state’s sporting heritage.
Commending the indomitable spirit of Kishore Jena, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said, “Kishore Jena’s remarkable journey and exceptional performance at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest have not only brought glory to our state and nation but also inspire many athletes for years to come”.
The World Athletics Championship is a prestigious international competition that attracts the best athletes from all over the world to compete in a variety of track and field disciplines, according to the press release.
