As the seventh team admitted to the brand-new American Football League, the Buffalo Bills started their professional football careers. On October 28, 1959, Ralph C. Wilson received the franchise. Since then, the Bills have gone through long stretches of dominating championships and second-division frustration.

In their fourth season in 1963, the Bills had their first taste of victory as they tied for the AFL Eastern Division title but fell to the Boston Patriots in a playoff. Yet, in 1964 and 1965, they won their division and the AFL title each year by defeating the San Diego Chargers. Buffalo almost missed participating in the inaugural Super Bowl after falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1966 AFL championship game. The Bills then plummeted, winning just 13 games, dropping 55, and tying two throughout the following five seasons. When Saban arrived in 1972, he made the Bills competitive again by making the most of their star running back, O. J. Simpson. The Bills were the only team to ever participate in four consecutive Super Bowls after winning five AFC Eastern crowns in six years starting in 1988. In 2001, Levy was admitted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

During the Bills’ 13 seasons playing there, War Memorial Stadium had to be expanded from 26,000 to 45,748 spectators due to high attendance demands. The Bills relocated to Rich Stadium in the New York suburb of Orchard Park in 1973. In 1991, Buffalo supporters established an NFL single-season attendance mark with 635,889 spectators. Terry and Kim Pegula acquired the Bills in 2014. In the history of the franchise, they are only the second owners.

The Bills used attire modeled by the Detroit Lions during their first two seasons. Honolulu blue, silver, and white were the team’s initial colors, and the helmets were plain silver. The helmet had the numbers of the players on either side but no logo. The team’s colors were also altered in 1962 to red, white, and blue. The squad changed to blue jerseys with red and white shoulder stripes that were reminiscent of the uniforms used by the Buffalo Bisons AHL hockey team during the same period. The helmets had a central red stripe on a white background.

In 1964, the jerseys saw another makeover, this time the removal of the shoulder stripes and the addition of a characteristic four-stripe pattern on the sleeves, with two thicker inner stripes and two thinner outer stripes, all framed in red piping. The helmets had red and blue central stripes by 1965. In 1973, the final year of the standing buffalo helmet, the Bills introduced blue pants to be worn with the white jerseys. Through 1985, the blue pants persisted. From 1974 to 1986, the face mask of the helmet was blue; after that, it became white. In 1984, the helmet’s shell color was changed from white to red.

Under the guidance of general manager Tom Donahoe, the Bills’ uniforms underwent a significant transformation in 2002. The primary jersey color was changed to a deeper shade of blue, and nickel grey was added as an accent hue. The side panels of the white and blue jerseys were red. The royal blue numbers and a dark blue shoulder yoke were used on the white jerseys. The face mask remained white, and the helmet’s primary colors were red, navy blue, nickel, and royal blue.

The chicken wing, one of Buffalo’s most well-known dishes, inspired the new uniforms. The outfit is all-black with orange numerals and a gradation stripe down the side. This outfit includes a brand-new helmet because the NFL will no longer enforce the one-helmet rule starting in 2021. So far, the Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen’s jersey has been the most popular in the 2022 NFL season. Joe Burrow, Trey Lance, and Russell Wilson come after him.
