The All India Tennis Association (AITA) paid tribute to Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna as he readies himself for his final Davis Cup appearance during the World Group II tie against Morocco. The tie is scheduled to take place at the Vijayant Khand Mini Stadium over the weekend.
The felicitation ceremony, which recognized Bopanna’s remarkable contribution to Indian tennis, witnessed the presence of AITA President Anil Jain, India’s Davis Cup captain Rohit Rajpal, who also holds the position of Executive Committee Member of the Indian Olympic Association, AITA Secretary General Anil Dhupar, and other AITA officials. At 43 years old, Bopanna, currently ranked seventh in the world in doubles, made history last week by becoming the oldest player to compete in a Grand Slam doubles final at the US Open.
Bopanna’s journey in Grand Slam tennis began in 2006, and he achieved his first major milestone by reaching the final of the 2010 US Open alongside partner Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi. Over the years, he has competed at the Nitto ATP Finals on three occasions, each time with a different partner.
The Indian tennis sensation secured his maiden tennis major victory at the 2017 French Open, winning the mixed doubles title with his Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski. This achievement places him in an exclusive group of four Indians, alongside Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, and Sania Mirza, who have claimed a Grand Slam title.
Bopanna’s mixed doubles prowess continued as he reached the finals of the 2018 and 2023 Australian Opens, partnering with Timea Babos and Sania Mirza, respectively.
As Rohan Bopanna prepares for his final Davis Cup outing, the AITA’s felicitation serves as a tribute to his remarkable career and contributions to Indian tennis.
