Arshdeep Breaks Bumrah’s Record: Team India had two matches on their mind before facing Zimbabwe in the T20 World Cup 2026. One was their own game in Chennai. The other was happening far away in Ahmedabad.

South Africa were playing against West Indies, and the result of that match had a direct impact on India’s chances of reaching the semi-finals. For a few hours, Indian players and fans were supporting the Proteas. Even inside the team hotel, emotions were running high.

Arshdeep Singh’s Hotel Room Drama

Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh shared a funny moment after India’s win. He revealed that he was watching the South Africa vs West Indies match with his family. His father, Darshan Singh, was fully involved in the contest.

Whenever a West Indies batter hit a six, Arshdeep’s father reacted loudly in frustration. He could not control his emotions as India’s fate depended on South Africa winning the match. Arshdeep said he had to calm him down and remind him to simply enjoy the game and stay positive.

It was a tense match. West Indies had earlier scored big runs in the tournament, including 254 against Zimbabwe. But against South Africa, they struggled early. At one stage, they were 63 for 5 and later 83 for 7.

“We didn’t watch the whole thing, but it was certainly a see-saw affair,” Arshdeep joked as per India Today. “My family was with me in the hotel room and whenever the West Indies batters smashed a six, my father started shouting: ‘What on earth are you doing?’. He was hurling abuse. I had to settle him down and tell him not to get so worked up. I told him to just enjoy the cricket and keep praying for a South African win.”

Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd tried to rescue the innings with a strong partnership. They helped West Indies reach 176 for 8. It was competitive, but not enough.

South Africa Deliver Under Pressure

South Africa chased the target confidently. Aiden Markram played an attacking knock of 82 from 46 balls. Quinton de Kock scored 47 from 24 balls, and Ryan Rickelton added 45 runs.

They completed the chase in just over 16 overs and secured their semi-final spot. More importantly for India, this result kept their hopes alive.

Arshdeep later thanked South Africa in a light mood. He said the team had done India a big favour by keeping their qualification chances in their own hands. At the same time, he added that if the two teams meet in the final, India will aim to win.

India Respond With Big Win Over Zimbabwe

After that emotional wait, India had to focus on their own game. And they delivered in style.

Batting first, India posted a massive total of 258 runs. Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya both scored strong half-centuries. The batting unit showed aggression from the start and never slowed down.

Zimbabwe fought hard in reply. Brian Bennett played a brilliant unbeaten 97. However, the target was too large. India won the match by 72 runs.

Arshdeep Singh played a key role with the ball. He picked up three important wickets and controlled the flow of runs at crucial moments.

Arshdeep’s Growing Legacy In T20 World Cup

With his latest performance, Arshdeep continues to move up in India’s T20 World Cup bowling records. He now leads the list for most wickets by an Indian in the tournament’s history.

Most wickets for India in T20 World Cup:

  • 35 – Arshdeep Singh – Economy 7.33

  • 32 – Ravi Ashwin – Economy 6.49
  • 29 – Hardik Pandya – Economy 8.50
