One Speed To Another: GB’s Ashleigh Nelson Moves From Sprinting To Bobsleigh

Months after featuring in a taster session at the GB push-start training venue at the University of Bath, Ashleigh Nelson hit the Winterberg track in Germany, competing with Nicoll in the two-woman bobsleigh on the World Cup circuit.

Ashleigh Nelson is set to embark on a new sporting journey. The ace athlete from Great Britain is switching from tracks to snow. 

After having owned the summer sport, Nelson is now planning to leave a mark on the the winter ice. 

Adele Nicoll, a World Cup silver medallist in the two-woman sled, and also a former summer sport athlete, posted a query to her on social media.  

“Soooo… would you consider coming to try bobsleigh?”

“We’re just under two years out from the (Milano Cortina) 2026 Winter Olympics and I think you’d be good at it,” wrote Nicoll. “Strong tick. Fast tick. Powerful tick.”

The Olympian responded with two laughing emojis, an ‘erm’, accompanied by a voice note.  Thee content  mostly remains private, apart from a shared portion of the audio of the 33-year-old exclaiming: “You think I’ll be good at it?”

“It wasn’t perfect, but I’m learning and growing in my new sport every day,” wrote Nelson, citing her impressive solo effort of a 6.24-second push time in the all-important start, as a highlight. With Nicoll nursing an injured foot, and starting the race in the unusual position of seated in the sled, Nelson was pushing a sled with a total weight of 250kg off the start line. The pair will feature in their second outing, in St. Moritz, Switzerland on 12 January. Nicoll, who is also a two-time British champion in the shot put, will be seen pushing the sled from the start alongside Nelson.

Ashleigh Nelson was the first Brit to win a medal in 40 years with a bronze in the 100 metres and a gold medal in the 4 × 100 m relay at the 2014 European Championships.

In the 4 × 100 metres relay, she won a bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships and a silver medal at the 2019 World Championships. She was a gold medalist in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as part of the 4 x 100 metres relay squad for England.
