Mahmudullah Riyad, a seasoned batsman, and Taijul Islam, a spinner, were dropped by Bangladesh on Sunday for a three-match one-day international series against Ireland that will start the following week.

While Yasir Ali, Nasum Ahmed, and Shoriful Islam were recalled to an extended side for the series, batsman Zakir Hasan was called up.

Mahmudullah was rested for the series because we needed to see some fresh faces. Due to concerns about certain players’ injuries, a few extra players have been added to the squad, according to chief selector Minhajul Abedin, speaking to AFP.

Mahmudullah’s performance during the most recent ODI series against England raised questions for Bangladesh because he scored just 71 runs in three games while maintaining a worrisomely low strike rate of 66.98.

Bangladesh suffered its first home ODI series loss in nearly seven years when it was defeated by England by a score of 2-1.

In a three-game Twenty20 international series, the hosts currently have a 2-0 advantage over England. Ireland’s tour, which began on Sunday in Bangladesh, will come after the England series.

Ireland last competed in a bilateral series in Bangladesh in 2008. During this trip, Ireland will also play three Twenty20 internationals and a Test.

The ODI leg of the series will start, with the dates of the first three games—March 18, 20 and 23—being set in Sylhet, a city in the northeast.

The three Twenty20 matches will take place in Chittagong on March 27, 29, and 31 while the inaugural Test match between the two teams will take place in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium from April 4–8.
