Shubham Kumar, hailing from Arrah in Bihar, emerged victorious in the boys’ recurve category, securing a gold medal at the 6th Khelo India Youth Games. Shubham’s remarkable journey to the podium was marked by dedication, overcoming challenges, and showcasing his archery prowess.
Despite facing an arduous 30-hour train journey from Bihar to Gujarat for a national archery competition last month, Shubham’s determination shone through as he went on to win the team bronze. Undeterred by the tough conditions, he continued to exhibit his commitment to the sport.
Entering the Khelo India Youth Games, Shubham faced a higher level of competition and witnessed large-scale arrangements, a stark contrast to his previous experiences. Placing 11th in the qualifying round did not discourage him, and he expressed his unwavering confidence in securing a gold medal.
Reflecting on his achievement, Shubham stated, “I had come determined to win a gold at this Khelo India Youth Games, and I have achieved that.” Despite initial challenges in shooting and adapting to windy conditions, he remained focused on his goal.

Shubham’s journey in archery began just three years ago, and he shifted to the recurve category only a year and a half back. Overcoming ups and downs in performance, he reached a remarkable level of success, winning Bihar’s second gold at the Khelo India Youth Games.
His father, initially hesitant due to financial constraints, invested in Shubham’s recurve equipment after encouragement from his maternal aunt’s husband, a shooting medallist who recognized Shubham’s talent.
Training under coach Neeraj Kumar Singh at a small archery academy in Arrah, Shubham faces limitations in facilities, with a training area accommodating only five targets. Despite the less-than-ideal setup, Shubham emphasized the importance of patience and resilience in the sport.
Looking ahead, Shubham expressed confidence in his abilities and aspirations for international success, stating, “I am sure that I will bring an international medal soon.” His journey from overcoming challenges to clinching gold exemplifies the spirit of determination and passion in sports.
