Chelsea: The European champions begin their campaign with win

Chelsea beat Zenit St.Petersburg at Stamford Bridge 1-0 thanks to a second-half goal from Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea has begun their Champions League title defense with a 1-0 win over Zenit at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night. Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal of the night. Meanwhile, Zenit striker Dzyuba missed a sitter as they dropped all three points.

The London club and Zenit met for the first time in their history in a competitive match.

Romelu Lukaku scored the winning goal for the champions, Chelsea, in the 69th minute. The striker headed his goal beyond the goalkeeper from Azpilicueta’s cross. Lukaku was bought this summer for roughly around 110 million euros and he is paying his club off every penny they spent on him, so far.

This was Lukaku’s fourth goal for the London club in his fourth appearance. He has now scored three goals in two home matches so far in this season. The Belgian marksman has seven goals in six appearances for both club and country.

Zenit St Petersburg was organized in defense and threatening on attack. The Russian side missed two clear opportunities in front of the goal. Chelsea for all the woeful misses they had in front of the goal last season, now has a player who does not miss those chances. Lukaku grabbed the game for Chelsea, which appeared to head towards a goalless draw.

Chelsea will have to play better than this as they play Juventus in their next match in Europe on the 30th of September.
