Christian Horner was sacked in July 2025 after a successful nearly two-decade-long term. Laurent Mekies replaced him as the new Team Principal of Red Bull, and after over two months of the news, he has officially left Red Bull. The parting came with a hefty multi-million-pound exit package rumoured to be around £52 million ($70 million), making it among the most expensive deals in sports history.
Christian Horner: The Man Who Made Red Bull
Christian Horner’s journey started in 2005, when the team entered Formula 1 as a constructor, and since then, he has been the captain who guided the team to eight world drivers’ titles and six constructors’ crowns. Under his leadership, the team ascended from relative newcomers to perennial championship contenders, carving out an indelible legacy.
However, the past 18 months saw turbulence behind the scenes, coupled with a tougher season on the track as McLaren overtook the team’s dominance in 2025, raising questions over leadership and direction.
So, What’s Next For Horner?
The exit terms reportedly included a reduced payout aimed at allowing him to re-enter Formula 1, possibly by summer 2026. This essentially means Christian Horner remains very much a candidate for future team principal or senior management roles. His contract was initially valid until 2030, so the early termination and financial settlement cleared the path for a swift comeback.

Horner himself said, “Leading Red Bull Racing has been an honour and privilege. When we started in 2005, none of us could have imagined the journey ahead – the championships, the races, the people, the memories. I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved as a team, breaking records and reaching heights no one would ever believe were possible, and I will forever carry that with me.
“However, for me, my biggest satisfaction has been assembling and leading the most amazing group of talented and driven individuals and seeing them flourish as a subsidiary of an energy drinks company and seeing them take on and beat some of the biggest automotive brands in the world.”
