Copa America 2024: Mexico Crashes Out, Ecuador To Face Argentina in Quarters

Ecuador needed only a point against Mexico in Glendale, Arizona to move ahead on goal difference in Copa America 2024.

Ecuador held the nerve to hold Mexico in a goalless draw to advance into the quarterfinals of Copa America 2024. As the tournament hangs around the later stages of group games, Ecuador was only a draw away to ensure second place in group B behind Venezuela. With this Ecuador advanced to the quarterfinals at the Copa America 2024.

Ecuador needed only a point against Mexico in Glendale, Arizona to move ahead on goal difference. Their goals against Venezuela and Jamaica in earlier matches gave them an advantage on goal difference. They were well aware that they could enter the quarterfinal without scoring a goal.

Ecuador will now meet Group A winners Argentina in the quarter-finals to be held in Houston on Thursday.

Mexico launched a series of attacks in the final stages of the match, with Johan Vasquez forcing a save from Ecuador goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez in the 71st minute, six minutes after Santiago Gimenez struck the post with a shot from close range.

In the injury-time, Mexico was awarded a penalty by the referee in the eight minute. The penalty could well have sealed the deal for Mexico as Mexicans fans erupted in joy. However, the happiness of the Mexican supporters was short-lived as VAR asked the referee to review the decision.

Replays showed Felix Torres clearly got a touch on the ball in his tackle on Guillermo Martinez and the penalty was overturned. After failing to snatch a dramatic win in stoppage time, Mexico got eliminated from Copa America  2024. They failed to score in their second consecutive game.  The draw pulled down Mexico to third place in Group B, behind Ecuador and Venezuela.

Mexico’s group exit from Copa America 2024 has raised questions on whether Jaime Lozano is the right man to lead them in the run up to the 2026 World Cup. They only needed to find a goal against Ecuador to steal a place into the quarter-finals.

Mexico were one of the favorites to win the Copa America 2024 title. Their early exit from the tournament comes as a major upset in the championship.
