US Exits Copa America 2024 After Loss To Uruguay

There were hopes of the US making it to the quarters of Copa America 2024 during the second-half after Bolivia equalized to make it 1-1 against Panama, leaving the US on course for qualification provided they continued to hold Uruguay.

The United States crashed out of the Copa America 2024 after going down 1-0 to Uruguay. On the other hand Panama progressed into the quarter-finals after a 3-1 win against Bolivia.

The host country needed to move-ahead or level Panama in Group C game to secure a place in the quarters.

There were hopes of the US making it to the quarters during the second-half after Bolivia equalized to make it 1-1 against Panama, leaving the US on course for qualification provided they continued to hold Uruguay.

USA Run In Copa America 2024 Comes To An End 

The US hopes suffered a blow when Uruguay took the lead in a controversial goal through Mathias Olivera in the 66th minute.

Ronald Araujo’s powerful header from Nicolas de la Cruz’s free-kick was carried away by US goalkeeper Matt Turner, but only into the path of Olivera, who tucked away the rebound.

However, it appeared in the replays that Olivera was offside when Araujo first made contact with the ball.  Despite a lengthy VAR review, referee Kevin Ortega ruled that the goal would stand.

It became difficult for the US to qualify for the quarter-finals after Panama had already taken a 2-1 lead against Bolivia.

“It’s difficult to say right now, obviously the emotions are running high,” US captain Christian Pulisic said after the match. “We had a good start and brought a lot of energy, but just didn’t have enough quality. We just couldn’t find a solution”, he added.

The USA’s first-round exit raises eye-brows about the future of US coach Gregg Berhalter, who has been facing criticism from American fans for his poor run.

Berhalter was only reappointed to the US coach in June last year following a long gap after leading the team to the 2022 World Cup.

The country’s early exit from Copa America is set to raise questions about his role in the US football team in the run-up into the 2026 World Cup. Berhalter has given just five wins in 20 matches against top-20 teams during his tenure.
