Cristiano Ronaldo Converts Extra-Time Penalty Miss Into Shootout Victory For Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo had the opportunity to give Portugal the lead during the first half of the extra-time when a penalty was awarded after a foul on Diogo Jota.

Portugal’s game against Slovenia in the Round of 16 of Euro 2024 saw a plethora of emotions in the ground. Portugal clinched a 3-0 victory against Slovenia in penalty shootouts at the Frankfurt stadium.
The match went into extra-time after both the teams went goalless in both the halves. Ronaldo had the opportunity to give Portugal the lead during the first half of the extra-time when a penalty was awarded after a foul on Diogo Jota.
It was the jersey n0. 17 who stepped up to take the shot, but to his disbelief, the penalty was saved by Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Burst Of Emotions
When the extra-time entered its half-time, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner could not hold back his emotions and let free flow of tears.
Teary-eyed Ronaldo was seen being consoled by his Portuguese teammates and he continued playing when the match resumed.
The Portugal captain regained his composure and got ready for the shoot-out. He took the opening shot for Portugal and netted the first goal leading the way for victory.
In having redeemed himself from the earlier miss, Ronaldo held up his hands as a mark of apology to the supporters.

Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved all three penalties as Portugal won 3-0 in a shootout.
“First it was sadness and then it was joy, that’s what football gives you, inexplicable moments, a bit of everything,” Ronaldo said after the match.
“I didn’t make a single mistake this year and when I needed something the most, Oblak saved it.
“Slovenia spent the whole game defending and when that happens, it all becomes difficult.”

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez was all praise for the forward man who did not let his emotions distract him in the shoot-out.
“Ronaldo missed a penalty and then was decisive when he started the penalty shoot-out, he paved the way,” Martinez said.
With this win Portugal have entered into the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 where it will be facing France.
