The World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev dominated throughout the whole match. However, for the 2019 US Open Runner-up Medvedev, this was his 3rd Grand Slam Final, reaching his second of 2021 as he had earlier lost in the Australian Open final to Djokovic in February.
Daniil Medvedev en route to the Men’s Singles Final of the 2021 US Open had only dropped a set once. Meanwhile, for the 34-year-old from Serbia, this was his 5th consecutive time to lose an opening set.
As a result, Djokovic’s bid to win all major tournaments in the same season came crashing down. And the record of the most Men’s Singles titles remains tied at 20 with his rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Rod Laver still is the last man to win all four Grand Slams in a single season in 1969.
Achievements earned by Daniil Medvedev with this win:
The 25-year-old is the 3rd Russian man to win a Major singles title, after Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin.
He is also the 1st Russian man to win US Open, since Marat Safin in 2000.
The only player to defeat Novak Djokovic in a Grand Slam in 2021.
Earned his maiden Grand Slam title with this win.
