The 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League will begin in less than two weeks, with a total of ten teams competing for the trophy. Only four teams in the competition have yet to win the cup: Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants, and Punjab Kings.

This year, the Capitals will have a golden opportunity to remove their name from this embarrassing list by winning the T20 Championship. The franchise will begin its season on April 1 against the Super Giants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, led by new captain David Warner.

The Capitals reached the league final for the first time in 2020 in the United Arab Emirates, led by Shreyas Iyer. However, with Iyer ruled out due to injury, Rishabh Pant was given the captaincy for the 2021 season. That season, DC won the points race but fell to the Kolkata Knight Riders in the second qualifier.

Pant was also backed by management for the 2022 season, while Shreyas Iyer was released for the mega auction. However, because Rishabh has been ruled out for seven to eight months due to multiple injuries, the team was forced to select a new captain for the 2023 edition.

David Warner, who led the franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad to a title win in 2016, was the obvious choice in the absence of the wicketkeeper-batter. Warner has extensive experience as a captain in the Indian Premier League, and Delhi will be hoping for another outstanding performance from him.

Meanwhile, the team will be playing on its home turf in Delhi for the first time in three years. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has restored normalcy to the extravaganza by reverting to a home-and-away format. The Capitals, like the other nine teams, will play seven home games this season.

While they will face LSG in their first game, their season will conclude on May 20 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi against Chennai Super Kings.

A look at last season’s performance

The Delhi Capitals had a forgettable season in the Indian Premier League last year. After three years of strong play, the team failed to make the playoffs, finishing fifth in the points table with seven wins and as many losses.

The Delhi Capitals had a forgettable season in the Indian Premier League last year. After three years of strong play, the team failed to make the playoffs, finishing fifth in the points table with seven wins and as many losses.

Rishabh Pant and his team got off to a good start, defeating the Mumbai Indians by four wickets. They struggled to maintain momentum and consistency, however, and lost almost every alternate game.

Toward the end of the league stage, the Capitals needed a win in their final game against the Indians to advance to the Eliminator. However, Tim David and Jasprit Bumrah ruined the chances of the 2020 finalists as MI cruised to a five-wicket victory.

New signings ahead of the 2023 IPL season

During the IPL 2023 mini-auction, the Delhi Capitals were relatively quiet. They arrived at the event with a purse of INR 19.45 crore and five open slots. The team’s management made some wise decisions by spending a reasonable sum of money to acquire the services of four players.

Mukesh Kumar was the most expensive signing for the team, costing INR 5.5 crore, while Rilee Rossouw cost INR 4.6 crore. Phil Salt and Ishant Sharma completed the team for INR 2 crore and INR 50 lakhs, respectively.

In the meantime, prior to the auction, the team acquired Aman Khan by trading Shardul Thakur to the Kolkata Knight Riders. Notably, DC has yet to name a replacement for Rishabh Pant.

Strengths

Because of the presence of David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, Rilee Rossouw, and Rovman Powell, the Delhi Capitals have a dynamic batting unit. All of the aforementioned players are known for their hard-hitting abilities, which other teams must be wary of.

Furthermore, with Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav on the team, they have one of the best spin attacks in the league. Axar has recently made headlines due to his outstanding performance with both the bat and the ball. Meanwhile, Kuldeep has made the most of every opportunity he has had to play international cricket for India. Axar and Kuldeep were both standout performers for the team last season.

Weaknesses

The wicketkeeping position will be one of the team’s main concerns in the 16th season. With Rishabh Pant out, the Capitals are down to one wicketkeeper-batter in Phil Salt.

However, in order to include the Englishman in the team, DC will have to leave out one of the power-hitters, Mitchell Marsh, Rilee Rossouw, or Rovman Powell. To fill the void left by Pant, the team needs to find a good Indian wicketkeeper-batter as soon as possible.

In addition, the Capitals have a young pace unit led by Khaleel Ahmed and Chetan Sakariya. Due to the limited number of overseas players, DC is likely to play only one between Anrich Nortje and Mustafizur Rahman. The presence of two inexperienced seamers on the bench could spell disaster for the Capitals.

Another issue that DC may face in the 2023 edition is the absence of a good Indian middle-order batter. Despite the fact that they selected Manish Pandey in the auction and have Sarfaraz Khan, none of the players have been in particularly good form recently. Without Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw appears to be the only good Indian batter in the squad at the moment.

Season Prediction

The Delhi Capitals are likely to make significant changes to their starting lineup for the season, but the team still has a good chance of succeeding. The responsibility for leading the Capitals to victory will fall primarily on the shoulders of the opening pair of David Warner and Prithvi Shaw.

After failing to make the top four last season, we expect the Capitals to perform well and make the playoffs in 2023.
