Both football players and managers lose their heads when any fixtures are announced. Football players and managers nowadays can’t wrap their heads around when their teams have to play twice a week.

There are many instances of managers reasoning their losses due to the fixtures in a week. There are some players and managers who look beyond the problem of fixtures and find a solution for themselves. One such instance is Mark Hughes in 1987 playing two games in one day. Playing two games in one day is unthinkable at this point.

On the 11th of November 1987, Mark Hughes had to play in a game against Czechoslovakia in Prague for the Wales national team. The match between Wales and Czechoslovakia was an important match for Wales as it was a European Championship qualifier.

The game started in the afternoon when Hughes’ side ended on the losing side but he had no time to dwell upon this loss as he was quickly taken to a private jet. The private jet flew Hughes across borders to West Germany where he was playing for Bayern Munich. Munich themselves had an uphill task as they were playing an important cup game against Borussia Monchengladbach.

While recalling the incident Hughes even said that the plane flew over the stadium. Hughes quickly changed into his Munich kit from his Wales kit on the plane. At the airport waiting for Hughes was a car that took him straight to the stadium. At half-time Munich was trailing 1-0 and in the 60th minute, Hughes entered the field. It was second time lucky for Hughes as he ended on the winning side in his second game of the day. Munich won the game 3-2 as the match went into extra time.

Hughes in his career won two premier league titles and three FA Cups with Manchester United. He even won a FA Cup with Chelsea as well. Hughes currently manages Bradford City in the Football League Two.
