Did you know that these cricketers used drugs?
In the urge to win every time even some top cricketers often take performance-enhancing drugs. Let’s take a look at some cricketers used drugs.
Cricket like any other sport has its share of competition. Players sometimes have the urge to win every time or perform every time. Some players work hard to achieve this feat while some players take the wrong path and end up taking drugs to enhance their performance. Players are the constant pressure to perform at their best and hence there are times when they resort to drugs to help them. Here are some of the instances where cricketers used drugs.
Shane Warne
Only one day before the 2003 World Cup, Shane Warne, the Australian great leg-spinner, received a one-year suspension after a positive drug test. As a result of a positive drug test for a diuretic, a prohibited substance, during an ODI series, Warne was sent home. Warne claimed that in order to look better, he took a fluid tablet that his mother provided him.
Nonetheless, the Australian Cricket Board ruled him guilty, and as a result, he was banned from competitive cricket for a year. Despite being later permitted to play charity matches, this drug ban forced him to miss the 2003 Cricket World Cup which Australia later on won.
Prithvi Shaw
Indian youngster, Prithvi Shaw in the year 2020 was also subject to a doping penalty because he ingested cough medication that contained an illegal chemical. At the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Shaw was tested, and it was discovered that the sample contained terbutaline.
Shaw was given an eight-month ban from competitive cricket, which was retroactively applied when the board was satisfied with his justification. The former U-19 World Cup winning captain was forced to miss a few Test series in which he was eligible for selection.
Yusuf Pathan
In 2018, Yusuf Pathan, who played India in both the 2011 World Cup and the 2007 T20 World Cup, was given a drug suspension. Before a domestic competition, he was required to provide a urine sample for an anti-doping test, and it turned out that a chemical was discovered in that test.
The World Anti-Doping Agency has banned Terbutaline, which was present in the sample. Yusuf Pathan received a retroactive five-month suspension. He acknowledged the punishment and pledged to exercise greater caution going forward.
Andre Russell
Andre Russell, the West Indies all-rounder who lights up all T20 leagues with his batting, was given a one-year suspension in 2017. Russell was found guilty because he was careless and failed three consecutive drug tests during a 12-month period by failing to report his whereabouts.
The Pakistan Super League and the Indian Premier League were both without the hard-hitting star Andre Russell. Russell made an effort to defend himself, but it was unsuccessful because he was given a one-year suspension.
