A new controversy has taken over the football world after reports claimed that Donald Trump was linked to a proposal to remove Iran national football team from the 2026 FIFA World Cup and replace them with Italy national football team.

The timing of this has made it even more sensitive. With tensions and conflict involving Iran in the background, the idea is being seen as politically driven by Donald Trump rather than something based on football. And that is exactly why it has upset so many people.

On the pitch, the situation is simple. Iran qualified. They went through the full process, played their matches, got the results, and earned their spot. Italy did not. Despite their history and reputation, they failed to make it through qualification again. That alone should end the debate, but instead it has turned into something much bigger.

Iran could face unjustified disqualification because of Donald Trump

This is where things start to feel wrong. Football is supposed to be about merit. You win games, you qualify, you play at the World Cup. Iran did their job. They worked for it, handled the pressure, and got there fairly.

Now imagine that being taken away for reasons that have nothing to do with football. It sends a bad message, not just to Iran, but to every team competing. If politics starts deciding who plays and who doesn’t, then the whole idea of qualification loses its meaning.

There is also the human side of it. These players have spent years trying to reach this stage. For many of them, a World Cup appearance is a once in a lifetime moment. To lose that because of decisions off the pitch would be extremely harsh.

As things stand, there is no official move to remove Iran, and they are still expected to play. But the fact that this conversation is even happening because of Donald Trump shows how easily politics can creep into sport. And that is the real concern. Once that line is crossed, it becomes very hard to draw it again.
