Dinesh Karthik is a happy man. At 37, he has achieved what many others thought impossible. The flamboyant wicket-keeper batter is at the far end of his career. However, he made a stunning comeback to the Indian team.

Debuted in 2004, DK was under the shadow of legendary wicket-keeper batter MS Dhoni, for the most part of his career. As a result, he did not receive enough opportunities to express and excel himself. However, a hardworking Karthik did not let his goal subside and, in the end, made a memorable comeback. Incidentally, his recent exploits in the IPL gave a breath of life to his career.

Dinesh Karthik the finisher

DK’s astounding knock in the Nidahas Trophy final is still part of cricket lovers’ golden memories. He smashed an unbeaten 29 off 8 balls to give India the cup. That special knock against Bangladesh gave a new lease on life to his stop-start career.

At present, DK is behind Rishabh Pant in the pecking order, in the eleven. However, his finishing abilities present a strong case for his inclusion in the eleven. The experienced campaigner did fairly well since making the comeback and played some crucial cameos for Team India, in the limited opportunities he got recently.

A Dream Come True for DK

The Tamil Nadu cricketer could not hide his excitement after being named in the Indian squad for the big event. After the selection, Karthik tweeted “Dreams do come true”. The tweet attracted a lot of fans, and a few members of the Indian team as well. All-rounder, Hardik Pandya, who saw DK’s tweet, gave a one-word reply, and it fetched a lot of love. The Gujarat cricketer wrote ‘champion’.

It is indeed a dream return for Karthik, who made his debut in India way back in 2004. Earlier, in an interview with BCCI.tv, he had said: “These are small tick-boxes that we need to have at this point. But the ultimate goal is to do well in the T20 World Cup.”

I think this is a very different team and I am enjoying this setup. There is a great sort of calmness that is around the captain and the coach. A lot of credit must go to them,” Karthik added. Can Karthik end up as an ICC World Cup winner? Time will tell.
