Ex-England star on Virat Kohli’s “Failed Captain” Remark: “No One Remembers…”
Star batter Virat Kohli recently spoke out about being referred to as a “failed captain” by many experts and supporters because Team India failed to win any ICC trophies while he served as captain.

Due to the fact that Team India failed to win any ICC trophies while he served as captain, many experts and fans labelled the star batter Virat Kohli as a “failed captain.” In Test cricket, the 34-year-old batter led Team India to great heights with 40 victories out of 68 games. Additionally, under Kohli’s direction, Team India won 30 out of 50 T20 Internationals and 65 out of 95 ODIs. However, Kohli’s captaincy received a lot of criticism for failing to win any significant ICC trophies while he was captain. Also not afraid to poke fun at the India batter, former England spinner Monty Panesar said that people always remember who won the ICC competitions.
“Unfortunately, that is the stress of leading India as captain. Nobody recalls the teams that finished second or third. We never forget ICC competition winners, “Panesar tweeted.
Kohli previously acknowledged that criticism never caused him to evaluate himself, and he is proud of the cultural shift that occurred as a result of his leadership.
“Look, you compete to win competitions. I served as captain for the Champions Trophy in 2017, the 2019 World Cup, the T20 World Cup in 2021, and the World Test Championship. I was viewed as a failed captain after three or four ICC tournaments, Kohli said on the RCB Podcast.
“I never assessed myself from that perspective; what we ultimately accomplished as a team and as a cultural shift will always be a source of pride for me. While a tournament lasts only a short while, a culture develops over time. To do this, you need consistency, which requires more qualities than simply winning a competition, he said.
Both the ICC World Cup trophy in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013 were won by Kohli as players while MS Dhoni served as their captain.
India advanced to the finals of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy and the 2021 ICC World Test Championship under Kohli’s leadership, where they were defeated by Pakistan and New Zealand, respectively. India lost to New Zealand in the semi-finals of the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The 2021 T20 World Cup even saw them face a group-exit.
