Mohammed Ben Sulayem has issued a statement after a series of key discussions between the FIA and current Formula 1 drivers over the upcoming 2026 power unit regulations.
The proposed 50/50 power unit split has drawn criticism from a majority of the grid. Drivers have flagged concerns around safety, including dangerous closing speeds and the need for lift-and-coast during qualifying laps.
Originally planned alongside the opening races, these discussions were brought forward after the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia rounds.
The unexpected gap allowed multiple meetings to take place through April, giving teams and drivers time to assess and suggest possible changes.
The feedback gathered is expected to shape proposals ahead of the Miami round in early May.
Formula 1 Drivers offer ‘invaluable’ input
According to Ben Sulayem, driver feedback has played a central role in the ongoing Formula 1 review process, with several key areas identified for potential adjustment.
He said, “I am delighted to report that there has been constructive and collaborative discussion between the FIA and the Formula 1 drivers ahead of tomorrow’s CEOs and team principals meeting to discuss potential changes to the 2026 Regulations.”
He also added, “The drivers have provided invaluable input on adjustments which they feel should be made, particularly in the areas of energy management to ensure safe, fair and competitive racing. The FIA has also held a series of meetings over the past few weeks with technical representatives from the teams, power unit manufacturers and FOM to discuss proposed changes. Safety and the best interests of the sport are the main focus of these discussions.”
“Following the meeting tomorrow, the final proposals will be put before a FIA WMSC e-vote.”
So, a crucial meeting is scheduled for April 20, where the FIA will sit down with team principals and Formula 1 CEOs to finalise potential changes.
The outcome of this meeting will determine the final proposal sent to the FIA World Motor Sport Council for approval.
