Despite the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team being on top of the world after winning three consecutive races, George Russell is still keeping everything in perspective.

He doesn’t want to get far ahead of himself, saying, “It’s too early to say that we’re in a two-man title battle.”

It’s rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli who currently sits on top of the standings, holding a nine-point lead after back-to-back wins in China and Japan.

That early advantage has already sparked talk of an all-Mercedes championship battle between the two teammates.

Still, George Russell believes it’s way too soon to lock that narrative in.

George Russell On F1 Title Battle

George Russell told the media that, “Firstly, 100 per cent [Mercedes will] give the same opportunity to the two of us. That’s always been the case for Mercedes ever since the Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg days.”

He continued, “Of course, I hope it’s just the two of us going for the championship, but I don’t want to get ahead of ourselves.”

“In 2022, after three races, I think Charles Leclerc had a 30-plus point lead, and Max Verstappen was saying the championship is over and Ferrari were the quickest, and then in the end they were not.”

Mercedes is on top, but rivals are still in the fight

While Mercedes has looked strong, George Russell pointed out that rivals haven’t shown their full hand yet.

In particular, McLaren remains a threat despite not introducing major upgrades recently.

“I think we have a very good direction, the correlation is very good,” he said.

“We’re ticking all of the boxes that tell us we have a really great foundation with the car, of course, these things change.”

“We know McLaren has not brought a major update recently, and when you look at their performance in Suzuka, I think Oscar Piastri could have won that race without any safety car at all.”

Despite the early momentum, George Russell is staying grounded and avoiding long-term predictions.

“I’m just taking it race by race. The championship is not even in my mind.”

“I just go to every race, try and maximise the performance, and we’ll count the points at the end of the season.”

For now, Mercedes may have the edge, but as Russell made clear, the title fight is far from settled.
