GFA President Caitano Fernandes Prioritizes Women’s Football and Youth Development for Goa

Goa Football Association President Caitano Fernandes emphasizes the significance of developing women’s football and youth programs in Goa.

Caitano Fernandes, the President of the Goa Football Association (GFA) and member of the SAFF Competitions Committee, prioritizes the advancement of women’s football and youth development in the state. Fernandes, with a deep commitment to the sport, has dedicated himself to the ‘Mission Goa Football’, focusing on uplifting football in Goa as his primary goal.

Reflecting on his one year in office, Fernandes highlighted the progress made since he assumed the presidency. “A year ago, Goa football faced challenges, and many believed its glory days were over. However, I didn’t buy into that narrative,” said Fernandes.

He further mentioned, “I crafted a vision plan and sought input from clubs months before my election. Upon my election, my priority was to implement the elements highlighted in the vision plan.”

Emphasizing achievements during his tenure, Fernandes stated, “Since assuming office on October 30, 2022, we’ve successfully conducted a record 826 matches in seven months, ensuring timely completion of all competitions. We’ve set records by organizing 16 matches on two occasions in a single day and hosting over 25 floodlit matches, engaging more than 7060 players in GFA competitions during the 2022–23 season.”

The GFA president highlighted the association’s innovative steps, stating, “For the 2023–24 season, GFA has implemented all leagues and player registrations on CRS, a first among state associations in the country, currently boasting 18 leagues on CRS.”

Proud of Goa’s achievement in the Tier 2 Junior National Championship for Girls, Fernandes spoke glowingly about the victory after 22 years, signifying progress in women’s football. He affirmed the ongoing efforts towards the upliftment of women’s football in Goa.

Collaboration with the state government for infrastructural and financial backing has been a focus. Fernandes expressed, “We’ve secured six football grounds exclusively for GFA’s use from the government. Additionally, we’ve proposed a plan to the government, and the Chief Minister has allocated around Rs 6 crore for football development.”

While acknowledging accomplishments, Fernandes emphasized the ongoing work and future plans. “Many things have been achieved, and much more is in progress. We aim for teams to play 20-25 matches in the youth league this season and to organize over 2000 matches across U-18 leagues,” he remarked optimistically, envisioning a promising future for Goan football on the national stage.
