The New Chandigarh Stadium also witnessed a historical event where two legends of Indian cricket, Harmanpreet Kaur and Yuvraj Singh, were recognized with named stands.

This commemorative event was opened just before the second men’s T20 International match between India and South Africa. Other important cricket personalities, family members, as well as other dignitaries like Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, attended this function.

Yuvraj Singh: A Cricketing Icon

Yuvraj Singh, who announced his retirement from international cricket in 2019, has left an indelible mark on Indian cricket. Having made his debut for India back in 2000, Yuvraj has been a major part of India’s cricketing success in all formats of cricket. With 40 Tests, 304 ODIs, and 58 T20 Internationals under his belt, it would be difficult to find anyone who has impacted Indian cricket like this player.

He was a major factor in India winning their maiden T20 World Cup in 2007. He also starred in India’s victory in their second major World Cup victory in 2011, as he won the player of the series award with 362 runs and 15 wickets. His left-arm spin, along with his batting prowess, has been a major addition to the Indian side for nearly 20 years.

Yuveraj also attended the inaugural event, where he was seen mingling with the Indian players. He gave a motivational talk to the players in a pre-match huddle. This event was also a significant one as it marked a connection between the glorious past of Indian cricket and the present crop of players.

Harmanpreet Kaur: Leading by Example for Women’s Cricket

Another deserving person for this award would be Harmanpreet Kaur, who is the captain of the Indian women’s cricket team. The contributions of Harmanpreet towards women’s cricket are no less than a revolution. She has recently led India to their maiden victory in the Women’s World Cup in November.

Debuting in 2009, Harmanpreet has become a key player influencing this sport. So far, she has 6 Tests, 161 ODIs, and 182 T20Is under her belt, as well as over 4,400 runs in ODIs and 3,654 in T20Is.

Famous for her aggressive batting style, turning situations around in a match, Harmanpreet has become a household name in India.  With her captaincy and performance, she has inspired many girls to take up cricket as a career.

A Special Moment for Indian Cricket

The inauguration of the stands in memory of Yuvraj Singh and Harmanpreet Kaur in New Chandigarh Stadium is a historic event that marks the triumph of these two cricket legends.

These players have been instrumental in taking Indian cricket to unprecedented scales, be it through their performance or their conduct in their personal as well as official capacities.

This event also marked the presence of Punjab’s Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann, along with other cricket officials, which further accentuates that this moment in Indian cricket history remains of great significance. These stands are now a reminder of all that hard work, dedication, and passion that has been shown by not only Yuvi but also Harmanpreet Kaur.
