High-class defenders become necessary in a race to win a title in football. The Premier League has seen some of the best defenders in the competition. But some of these defenders have scored a lot of goals.
Here are some of the defenders with the most goals in the Premier League.
John Terry
John Terry, competing with other elite players like Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidi, Sol Campbell, Tony Adams, and Vincent Kompany, is perhaps the best defender of the Premier League era. Terry biggest contribution to Chelsea was winning 15 major awards. But he also scored over 41 league goals in approximately 500 games for the North London club. It may be appropriate that the league’s all-time leading scorer is also probably its best defender. John Terry tops the list of defenders with most goals in the Premier League.
David Unsworth
David Unsworth, who is most known for his illustrious two-stint Everton career. He played nearly 450 matches over the course of a career that spanned fifteen Premier League seasons. He was an uncontested first-choice defender at Goodison Park as well as other locations throughout England. Several fans may have been astonished by his 38 goals. But his 20 goals between 1999 and 2003 are proof of how effective he was on both ends of the pitch.
Ian Marshall
A career that included 411 appearances spread over 18 seasons is as unbelievable as any other, and Ian Marshall, whose name many Premier League spectators will most probably forget, is fondly remembered at Oldham, Ipswich, and Leicester City. Marshall scored 33 goals in the Premier League.
Leighton Baines
Leighton Baines started his Premier League career with Wigan, where he played to a respectable level, but during the course of his time on the blue half of Merseyside, Everton, he became one of the most important defenders in league history. Baines, for a considerable amount of time was among the best left-backs in England. He was a renowned offensive threat as well as a solid defender. His prowess on set pieces is still legendary for a reason. Baines scored a total of 32 goals in the league.
Gary Cahill
Gary Cahill established himself long before he was a crucial centre back for Chelsea while playing for Aston Villa and, most significantly, Bolton Wanderers. Throughout his playing days, Cahill was a feared presence in the air on both the defensive and offensive ends of the ball. During the 2016–17 season, he scored quite a few headers for the Blues, including six goals—a very respectable total for a central defender. Remembering that he came so close to reaching the 30-goal threshold shouldn’t come as a surprise. He scored 28 goals in the Premier League.
