Seeded players make an exit
At the 6th Cello NSCI Open National Circuit squash competition, which was hosted by NSCI at their glass-backed squash courts, here on Saturday, it was high-octane action as two seeded players were eliminated in the men’s round of 32 matches.
Both Karnataka’s Pradeep Chaudhari and Maharashtra’s Avinash Yadav, who were seeded in the 9/16 division and lost to Delhi’s unseeded Harshit Jain and Maharashtra’s Aran Thwani respectively, made early exits from the competition due to the difficulty of their tasks due to the excessive humidity. Chaudhari put up a valiant fight against Jain, but errors at critical moments cost him a close match at 12-14, 17-19, 11-7, and 11-13. The battle between Yadav and Thawani lasted five games before Thawani won 11-9, 12-10, 6-11, 9-1, and 11-7. Rahul Baitha, the top seed for Maharashtra, defeated Dhruv Jaitly by scores of 11-5, 11-5, and 11-8 despite barely breaking a sweat.
Rahini Chheda, an unseeded player from Maharashtra, upset India Karan Vadehra of Delhi in a gruelling five-game match to claim the Girls U-11 title.
India, a Delhi-based player seeded in the 9/16 bracket, appeared to be headed for victory after rallying from two games down to tie the match, but Rahini, who works out at the NSCI with coach A I Singh, proved to be more than up to the challenge and prevailed 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8.
