In May, Jermall Charlo crashed his Lamborghini into another car on a road in Brazoria County. After a brief argument with the other driver, Charlo left the scene. He ignored attempts by law enforcement officers to pull him over. The police later intercepted him at a red light, a mile from the crash site.
Blood tests revealed Charlo’s alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. The police spokesperson noted that Jermall Charlo appeared intoxicated during questioning. He was arrested and released on a $9,500 bond.
Jermell Charlo, a former middleweight and light middleweight champion, is the identical twin of Jermell Charlo, who fought Canelo Alvarez in September 2023.
In Texas, the legal blood alcohol concentration limit is 0.08. Charlo’s level was 0.15, nearly double the limit. As this is a first-time offence, he faces potential penalties including a $2,000 fine, six months in jail, or a one-year driving ban. The misdemeanour charge could add a $500 fine.
Impact on Boxing Career

Jermall Charlo has been inactive since his WBC middleweight title defence against Juan Macias Montiel in June 2021. He returned to the ring with a unanimous decision win over Jose Benavidez Jr. in a non-title fight in November 2023.
Charlo was scheduled to fight Canelo Alvarez on May 4, but the match was cancelled in February. The DWI incident compounded Charlo’s professional difficulties, leading the WBC to strip him of his middleweight title shortly after.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman expressed support for Jermell Charlo, stating that the organisation will continue to assist him in addressing his mental health issues. The decision to strip Charlo of the title followed ongoing concerns about his inactivity.
