The team management looking to pick the third opener and adding him to the squad despite having both Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul already in the side does not look good from the management side.
The former all-rounder is against the addition of any further openers in India’s Test squad for 5- match series against England. He is also the World Cup-winning captain for India, claiming that there wouldn’t be any necessity to look beyond the pool of 20 members in the squad. This squad is currently residing in the UK.
This statement from Kapil Dev came after the reports on Saturday said that the management is looking to call up Prithvi Shaw from Sri Lanka to England tour after Shubman Gill had a leg injury and will miss out on the entire series.
Kapil Dew stated his opinion on picking the third opener for the England test series ‘I don’t think there is a need for it. There should be some respect for the selectors too. They wouldn’t have picked the team without consulting captain Kohli and coach Shastri, I ‘am sure of it. Kapil Dev meant you have two big such opening batsmen in KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. Kapil Dev seems to have not been satisfied with this theory. The squad that is being picked for this England test series already has other openers and I strongly prefer they are the ones to play. He also said they should respect the selectors as they wouldn’t have selected the squad without consulting Kohli and Shastri.
He strongly suggested that the replacement can be done from the original pool of players they have. Bringing the third opener in the squad wouldn’t do good to the confidence of KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. And also having reserve opener Abhimanyu Easwaran in the side.
Kapil Dev wants the captain and management to have a say that does.t mean that can overrule the selector’s call. He also said it would look like demeans the selectors and their role. Anyways it’s up to Virat and Shastri to take a call on it.
