KL Rahul To RCB? 3 Reasons Why It’s A Perfect Fit
KL Rahul might be released by LSG. RCB could be a perfect destination for him. Here’s why
As rumours swirl, it’s looking like KL Rahul might not be retained by the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. If that happens, Rahul, one of the league’s most reliable run scorers, will likely become a top target for several teams. Among the potential suitors, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) stands out as a logical fit, especially given that Rahul is originally from Bangalore and even represented RCB in 2013 and 2016.
Here are three solid reasons why RCB should pursue KL Rahul if LSG decides to release him:
1. Solving RCB’s Captaincy Dilemma
RCB is facing uncertainty in the captaincy department. While South African veteran Faf du Plessis captained the team in IPL 2024, he’s now 40 and may not be in RCB’s long-term plans. Given the focus on a future captain, Rahul could be a perfect choice. With his experience leading LSG and guiding them to playoffs in two of three seasons, Rahul could fill the leadership gap if RCB chooses not to retain Faf.
Virat Kohli, though a legend for RCB, is unlikely to return as captain. Rahul’s captaincy skills, combined with his batting prowess, would provide a steady leader as RCB plans for the future.
2. Filling the Wicket-Keeper Role
Dinesh Karthik, RCB’s go-to wicketkeeper in recent years, retired after IPL 2024. With his departure, RCB will need a reliable wicketkeeper-batsman who can also be a steady performer. KL Rahul, already experienced as a keeper-batsman, could seamlessly take over the role.
While Anuj Rawat is an option, he hasn’t made a significant impact. Rahul’s background as a keeper for both LSG and the Indian team could make him an ideal fit, bringing stability to RCB’s middle order and fulfilling the dual role that the team needs.
3. Reinforcing the Opening Partnership
In last season, Faf and Kohli formed a strong opening duo for RCB, but with Faf’s possible exit, RCB will be looking for a new opening partner for Kohli. KL Rahul, with extensive experience opening in the IPL and for the national team, would be an excellent addition.
Beyond their professional skills, Rahul and Kohli share a good rapport from their time on the Indian team. This could create a powerful opening combination, especially on home turf at Bangalore’s Chinnaswamy Stadium—a ground Rahul knows well, giving him an edge in adjusting to local conditions and boosting RCB’s chances of strong starts in their innings.
By adding Rahul, RCB would gain not only local talent but also a versatile player with leadership, wicketkeeping, and batting skills. Should Rahul become available, he could be just the player RCB needs to strengthen their squad and address their challenges ahead of IPL 2025.
