Audiences at the Arthur Ashe Stadium and those watching live in the USA; the thrilling Women’s Singles Round of 16 between Maria Sakkari and the former 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu were probably awake up till late.

The match lasted for about 3 ½ Hours, as the 17th seed, Greek Maria Sakkari defeated Canada’s Bianca Andreescu 6-7(2-7), 7-6(8-6), 6-3. The match went way into late night in New York, it finished around at 02:15 AM Local Time.

The match, however, broke the previous record of – latest finish in US Open Women’s Singles. The previous record was set by Madison Keys and Alison Riske in 2016 as the encounter between them ended at 1:46 AM.

Maria Sakkari will next meet the 4th seed Karolina Pliskova in the quarter-finals of the US Open 2021 as she looks forward to booking her semi-finals berth. It won’t be easy against Karolina Pliskova, 29, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist. Pliskova won her Round of 16 match in two sets against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova from Russia.

For the 26-year-old Maria, this is her second Grand Slam quarter-final as earlier this year she reached the semi-finals of the 2021 Roland-Garros (French Open), where she was defeated by the eventual champion Barbora Krejčíková of the Czech Republic.
