The Miami Open 2025 was one of the most thrilling tournaments ever. We got to witness the record-breaking frenzy of Novak Djokovic and some of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament as Mensik continued to defeat top-seeded players throughout the tournament. But he got his ultimate breakthrough moment when he defeated Novak in the final of the Miami Open and took the trophy home. The 19-year-old prodigy stunned the legendary and experienced player Novak to claim his maiden ATP title on 31 March 2025.
He defeated the Serbian legend in straight sets of 7-6, 7-6, and 7-4. His remarkable performance included firing 14 aces and showcasing exceptional speed and precision, denying Novak of his 100th career title and record seventh Miami Open crown. With a significant gap of over 18 years, this match was specifically important due to featuring the largest age gap of the event category until now.
The match was also delayed for nearly six hours due to rain in Florida, only for Mensik to stun the legend, preventing him from setting another record. Djokovic appeared to be troubled with an eye issue as he was seen applying eye drops frequently during the match. Mensik also acknowledged his inspiration due to Novak and paid him respect when he accepted the trophy. He said, “When I was young, I started to play tennis because of you. There is no harder task for a tennis player than to beat you in the finals of a tournament.”
“To be honest, I don’t know what to say. It feels incredible, obviously, I came for treatment, needed a miracle. And because of him, I stepped on the court, and because of him, I’m standing here,” he added

Novak accepted that Mensik was better and congratulated him. He shared, “This is Jakub’s moment — moment of his team, moment of his family. Congratulations, unbelievable tournament. It hurts me to admit it, but you were better! In the clutch moments, you delivered the goods [with] unbelievable serving and just a phenomenal effort mentally as well to stay tough in a difficult moment.”
