In 2017, Madeira Airport was renamed Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport. To celebrate, a bust of the Portuguese superstar was unveiled. Unfortunately, the result didn’t quite match the man himself.
Created by artist Emanuel Santos, the sculpture’s squinty eyes, oddly shaped smile, and almost cartoonish features quickly went viral. It became a meme overnight, with comparisons ranging from Pixar characters to mischievous clay figures.
The backlash was so intense that the bust was replaced a year later with a more accurate version. But the original remains an internet icon, proving that even the greatest player in the world isn’t immune to bad art.
Diego Maradona – The Golden Confusion
Diego Maradona’s legacy is untouchable. His statue in India’s Kolkata, however, left fans scratching their heads. Unveiled in 2017 to mark the 30th anniversary of his “Hand of God” goal, the sculpture showed him holding the 1986 World Cup… but his face looked more like a generic wax figure than the footballing genius from Argentina.

Mohamed Salah – The Shrinking Pharoah
Egyptian artist Mai Abdel Allah created a statue of Mohamed Salah in 2018, showcasing him in his trademark open-arm goal celebration. Admirable sentiment? Yes. But the final result? Salah’s head appeared disproportionately large, with his arms strangely short, giving him a bobblehead look.
The statue, unveiled at the World Youth Forum in Sharm El Sheikh, instantly became a meme, with fans dubbing it “Baby Salah.”

David Beckham – The Prank Statue
In 2019, James Corden’s Late Late Show played a prank on David Beckham by creating a deliberately hideous statue and unveiling it as if it were the real deal. The mock sculpture had an oversized chin, teeth that could cut glass, and a body shape more suited to a rugby player than a footballer.
