New Orleans Pelicans Team Profile and Analysis: Western Conference – Southwest Division NBA

Know everything about the New Orleans NBA Team and the achievements that have made it a popular team in the list of NBA.

The New Orleans Hornets were formed in 2002 and were based in Charlotte. In 2003, George Shinn relocated the team to New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, the team temporarily moved to Oklahoma City for two seasons as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets before returning to New Orleans for the 2007-08 season and reverting to the name New Orleans Hornets. In 2013, the team changed its name to the New Orleans Pelicans. Since the team’s relocation from Charlotte, they have played 18 seasons, achieving a 740-864 record, made the playoffs eight times, and won 2 playoff series and 1 division title.

On Feb 20, 2017, the New Orleans Pelicans acquired DeMarcus Cousins from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Buddy Hield, Tyreke Evans, Langston Galloway, a 2017 first-round pick, and a 2017 second-round pick. In 2019, Davis requested a trade from the team, which resulted in a fine. As a result, the Pelicans received the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft but later traded Davis to the Lakers in exchange for Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and three first-round choices. The Pelicans then traded the fourth overall pick in the 2019 draft to the Hawks, receiving the rights to the 8th, 17th, and 35th picks. This marked the conclusion of a period for the team.

In 2019, David Griffin was named as the executive VP of basketball operations for the New Orleans Pelicans, and Trajan Langdon was named as their GM, replacing interim GM Danny Ferry. In 2022, the New Orleans Pelicans signed a partnership with BetRivers, making it the official sportsbook partner and having its branding throughout the Smoothie King Center, and rebranding the VIP-themed Chairman’s Club as the BetRivers Chairman Lounge.

New Orleans struggled early in the season, losing 12 of its first 13 games due to injuries and chemistry problems. However, the acquisition of C.J. McCollum at the trade deadline helped turn things around. Although McCollum was the missing piece the team needed, they made it to the playoffs and pushed the top-seeded Suns to six games without Zion Williamson. With Williamson’s return, the arrival of Dyson Daniels, and the growth of young players like Jose Alvarado, Trey Murphy III, and Herbert Jones, the Pelicans are poised to be a significant force for years to come.
