The team was established in 1936. Its initial name was Cleveland Rams that was based in Cleveland, Ohio. It won the NFL Championship Game in 1945 before moving to Los Angeles the next year. The Los Angeles Rams introduced a logo on the helmets for the first time. Fred Gehrke made a painting of ram horns in 1948 on leather helmets. The logo became the trademark of the team.

History

The Rams wore red and black uniforms in 1937 when they debuted. The uniform featured black uniforms having red sleeves and shoulders, red helmets, red socks having black and white stripes, and tan pants. The next year, they changed the color of their uniform to royal blue and gold. They switched their team colors to gold and royal blue, including white pants with royal stripe socks of royal blue color, gold helmets, and royal blue uniforms having gold shoulders and numbers. By the mid-1940s, the Rams switched to gold jerseys with navy blue shoulders and serif numerals, white pants with a gold-navy-gold stripe, socks with two navy stripes, and helmets of the color gold. This uniform was retained even after the team relocated to Los Angeles.

In 1947, navy blue helmets replaced the former helmets. With the introduction of the horns on navy blue helmets, they were yellow-gold. In 1949 the Rams started using plastic helmets, and the Riddell company of Des Plaines, Illinois, rendered the horns by giving a painted design to the helmets at the factory. In 1949, standard block numbers replaced the serif numerals on the jerseys.

About Uniform

In 1950, wide and bold horns were joined in the front at the helmet centre that curved around the earholes, which was later tapered between 1954 and 1955. In 1950, one gold stripe between two blue stripes was added on the pants, and royal blue stripes of North-western University style were on jersey sleeves. The numerals were given a white border in 1953. The addition of the TV number on the sleeves of the jersey was done in 1956.

When the NFL rule was announced in 1957 specifying that the team members must wear jerseys of dark primary colors and light shirts for the road team, the Rams chose home jerseys of royal blue color with golden stripes and numerals in the front and back with white borders. However, the white border was omitted in 1958. The Rams wore golden jerseys for road games till 1957. In 1958, they changed golden jerseys to white jerseys having blue stripes and numerals. The road jersey had three blue-gold-blue crescent stripes on the shoulder in 1962 and 1963.

There came a change in the color of the jersey in 1964 as the color was changed to light blue and white. The helmet also went under modification as helmet horns became white and wider. It was made in such a way that it was separated from the front plane of the helmet. For the first eight of those seasons, Rams decided to wear their white jerseys at home games. As the team used to wear white Jerseys in road games too, most of the season, they took the field with whites and used the blue jersey occasionally.

But the touch of yellow returned on the jersey of the Rams in 1973. Yellow got restored in the whole uniform’s color scheme, including the jersey, pants, and helmet. This time, the horns were not only on the helmet but also on the shoulders and sleeves of the jersey. The team preferred to take the field with the previous blue jersey in the home games. Minor changes were made to the shoe colors and sock strips.

An interesting case happened from 1973 to 1984 as Jack Youngblood and linebacker Jim Youngblood both used to play for the Rams. Coincidentally, both have the same surname and same initials. So they had to use jerseys with their full name written on them. Moreover, Youngblood was a big word to be written on the jersey. For this reason, they had to use a double-decker format. Between 1983 and 1987, Rams’ Eric Dickerson came up with a new style as he took the field with his goggles, white neck roll, and Vettex mouth guard. The Rams moved to St. Louis from Los Angeles in 1995. On this occasion, they introduced a patch on their jersey, but the rest remained unchanged.

One year after they won Super Bowl XXXIV,  Rams came up with a fresh look. The royal blue shade was turned into navy, and the yellow parts of the uniform were turned into golden colors. The shoulder horn was scrapped alongside the size of the NFL jersey and became short. The new pants had no strip and solid gold in color.

Blue pants were brought up in the team uniform in 2003. The pants had striping this time, unlike the previous time, but there was not much elegance in the gold pants, but these blue pants became a disaster for the Rams as the Rams went mono-blue for the game against the Cardinals. And it was the first time in their club history. 2012 was a significant year in the history of the NFL as Nike took over the NFL’s uniform contract. Rams decided to adopt one of the trademark designs of Nikes, which looked like Eric Dickerson‘s old neck roll. The gold pants were officially mothballed.

In 2016, the Rams put on a white uniform to represent themselves. In an interview in 2016, the team chief announced that there would be no change in the uniform until 2019.

Jersey

Finally, some changes came in the uniform of the Rams as they revealed a new uniform design on May 13, 2020. There were three sets of colors. Two of them had a royal blue jersey with jersey numbers in a yellow and white gradient and yellow sleeve striping, which was similar to the new shape of the horns. The pants were blue, similar to gradient stripes, and included yellow pants with solid white and blue stripes. Finally, the road jersey was bone gray in color. It featured patterns in white and yellow, and blue numbers. A metallic blue helmet with a facemask was developed for all these uniform combinations.

An updated version of the 1973-1999 road jersey set was introduced in 2021. It was an alternately-white jersey, having a blue rounded jersey number and the patch of the team name on the left shoulder. Rams decided to wear yellow pants with white uniforms.
