Nico Williams Dreams Of Old Trafford vs Man Utd
Athletic Club star Nico Williams is thrilled to face Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals. After helping his team beat Rangers in the quarter-finals, Williams shared his excitement about playing at Old Trafford and aiming for the final.
On April 17, Athletic Club defeated Rangers 2-0 in the second leg of their quarter-final clash. The first goal came from Oihan Sancet just before halftime. Then, in the 80th minute, Nico Williams sealed the game with a confident finish. The win secured their spot in the semi-finals with a 2-0 win on aggregate.
After the match, Nico spoke about the upcoming challenge against Manchester United. He called it a dream to play at Old Trafford, one of the most famous football stadiums in the world.
He said:
“It’s a dream to play at Old Trafford, it’s an amazing stadium. We have to play a good match at home and then go there for the second leg, and hopefully reach that final. United are a great team and they showed that today with their comeback, but we’re going to go there with ambition.”
He added that Manchester United is a strong team, but Athletic Club will go with ambition and belief.
Nico also praised his team’s efforts this season. He mentioned how proud he is of what they’ve done so far.
“I think the team is doing something extraordinary. Last year, we won the Copa del Rey and this year, we’ve made it to the Europa League semi-finals. I hope we can reach that final, the team is doing everything necessary to get to that potential final. We’re happy, but we have to keep pushing, and that’s the only goal we have.”
At just 22 years old, Nico has already had an impressive season. So far, he has scored 11 goals and provided 7 assists in 42 games across all competitions.
He also helped Spain win Euro 2024, showing his talent on the international stage as well.
Manchester United also had a dramatic quarter-final game. They beat Lyon 7-6 on aggregate, even though they were losing 4-2 in extra time. In the final 10 minutes, they scored three goals and completed one of the biggest comebacks in recent Europa League history.
Former United legend Rio Ferdinand shared his thoughts after the match. He said:
“I said it would take more than a miracle to turn this game around and they managed to create that. This football club is steeped in history of big moments and magic moments. I’ve never seen anything like that as a spectator. It was an amazing thing. We saw so many fans leaving when it was 4-2 and you thought that was over.”
Now, Manchester United will travel to San Mames to face Athletic Club in the first leg on May 1. The return leg at Old Trafford will decide who moves on to the final.
