As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy came to an end, Team India’s injury problems multiplied, with Shreyas Iyer becoming the latest victim. Iyer, who had recovered from a back injury and rejoined the Indian team for the second Test in Delhi, complained of back pain after the second day of play in Ahmedabad and was sent for scans. The recurrence of Iyer’s back injury hurts not only India’s chances in the ODI series against Australia, but also his IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Iyer, who was set to lead KKR for the second time in the 2023 IPL, is reportedly set to miss the first half of the tournament. The two-time champions will be without not only their captain, but also their most important batter. However, given that this is a World Cup year and the Indian team will compete in the World Test Championship in less than two months, Iyer’s fitness is a top priority.

KKR is now without a captain for the start of the season. While the names Sunil Narine, Tim Southee, Nitish Rana, and Shakib Al Hasan are being bandied about, the franchise may have given a significant hint about who will captain KKR in Iyer’s absence. Many fans were surprised because it was Rinku Singh, the left-handed dasher.
