Sri Lanka’s Performance in PAK vs SL Asia Cup 2025
Sri Lanka’s hopes of elimination were strengthened following their second successive loss in the Asia Cup 2025. Having set a humble target of 134 runs, Sri Lanka’s batting line-up could not make the most of favourable conditions.
A series of early falls made them settle at 53/3 in the opening six overs, with Pakistan’s bowlers, especially Shaheen Shah Afridi, in top gear. Despite a strong knock from Kamindu Mendis (50 off 44), Sri Lanka could only make 63 runs in the final ten overs, ending with a total of 133/7.
Afridi’s Early Breakthroughs Propel Pakistan
The decision of Pakistan to bowl first once the toss was theirs was a masterstroke, with Afridi and Faheem Ashraf capitalising on the early movement. Kusal Mendis went early, while Afridi got rid of Pathum Nissanka too. Kusal Perera’s wicket at the end of the powerplay even more severely hampered Sri Lanka’s batting, and once Sri Lanka had ended the powerplay, in the middle overs, they were already at 53/3.
Talat & Nawaz Contributes To Pakistan’s Victory
Pakistan’s pursuit got off to a good start with Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman reaching a 45-run partnership. Sri Lanka, though, resisted stiff, with Maheesh Theekshana getting both openers out in the last over of the powerplay. Pakistan appeared in command despite two early wickets but were reduced to 80/5 after two additional wickets for Wanindu Hasaranga.
Hussain Talat and Mohammad Nawaz Seal the Win
As the game was in the balance, Hussain Talat (32* off 30) and Mohammad Nawaz (38* off 24) guided Pakistan to a nail-biting win. The duo established a strong 58-run partnership, taking negligible risks during the middle overs. As the game proceeded to the death overs, Nawaz went on with big hits, hitting three sixes of Chameera to win the game in style.

The game was backed by Pakistan’s tight bowled unit. Shaheen Afridi led the attack with three wicket, with Hussain Talat also important with the ball with two wickets in his over. Their efforts with a tight offering of 4 overs for 8 runs from Abrar Ahmed, prevented Sri Lanka from posting a competitive total.
