Punjab Kings Team: All You Need To Know About ‘Lions’ Of The IPL
Everything You Need to Know About the IPL’s ‘Lions’
Preity Zinta’s co-owned Punjab King (formerly Kings XI Punjab) team had a successful first season (2008), finishing fourth on the table. The Punjab side reached the finals for the first time in 2014, led by the swashbuckling Indian batsman Virender Sehwag, but were defeated by Gautam Gambhir’s Kolkata Knight Riders. Since then, the team has failed to make an impression.
Last year, the entire team was replaced, but the results were the same. K L Rahul has been named captain. Despite this, the team finished sixth out of eight in the IPL 2020.
Punjab Kings Team History
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) established the Indian Premier League in 2007, based on the Twenty20 format of the game. On February 20, 2008, franchises for eight cities were auctioned off in Mumbai. The Punjab team was purchased by Mohit Burman of the Dabur Group (46%), Ness Wadia of the Wadia Group (23%), Preity Zinta of the Dey & Dey Group (23%), and Saptarshi Dey of the Dey & Dey Group (23%). (minor stake). The group spent $76 million to acquire the franchise.
Following the controversy surrounding the BCCI and Lalit Modi in 2010, the Indian Premier League announced on October 10, 2010, that the franchise contracts of Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals had been terminated. The teams announced that they would sue to stay in the Indian Premier League. Initially, the team attempted to negotiate a solution with the league, but when that failed, they decided to file a case in Mumbai High Court accusing the IPL of getting rid of the two teams so that when the bidding process for the 2012 IPL season began, the contract would be awarded to a more lucrative bidder.
The High Court was involved in the reinstatement of Kings XI Punjab.
Name change
Kings XI Punjab was renamed Punjab Kings on February 17, 2021, ahead of the 2021 Indian Premier League.
The reason for changing the franchise name, according to Ness Wadia, was to “relook at things” and rebrand after 13 seasons of IPL. He expressed his disappointment over the franchise for “not being able to win a title” and expected them to “start afresh” after a name change. He went on to say that the name change had been planned for two years and that COVID-19 had simply delayed the announcement.

Under George Bailey’s leadership, the team won the first five games in a row in 2014. Virender Sehwag, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Johnson all contributed significantly throughout the tournament. Virender Sehwag scored a brilliant 122 in the semifinals to storm into the finals. Wriddhiman Saha made a spectacular 115* in the finals, but the Kolkata Knight Riders chased down the massive total.
Kings XI Punjab had no luck in 2015 and 2016
In the following seasons, the team finished last in the table in 2015 and 2016. In 2017, the team finished fifth. The team was completely restructured in 2018, with a new leader in place. The captaincy was assigned to R Ashwin. KL Rahul and Chris Gayle both had spectacular innings, but the team finished seventh in the points table.
