Red Bull Drops Liam Lawson, Yuki Tsunoda To Replace

3 Min Read

Red Bull Racing has officially dropped Liam Lawson after just two Grand Prix races in the F1 2025 season. The decision came in after a long week of speculations regarding Yuki Tsunoda replacing Liam; however, Red Bull neither confirmed nor denied any rumors. In fact, they came out in support of Liam Lawson and made it clear that he’s just having a bad time and that his performances will be monitored closely, though they did not confirm his exit.

Meanwhile, the speculations were strong due to Red Bull’s long history of promptly replacing drivers at any given moment, and this decision is being considered one of the most severe in the team’s history. Lawson was promoted to the main Red Bull team to replace Sergio Perez but suffered significantly in scoring points and finished in 15th position in both Grand Prix. In the Chinese Grand Prix, his position only improved due to the disqualifications of drivers ahead of him.

His inability to perform well has been attributed to the difficulty his car, RB21, poses on its drivers, demanding sharp skills. Liam Lawson also addressed the issue and said, “We are two races in, and we are racing. You would love to have 60 test days. I know a lot of the other guys tested a lot outside of the season. Unfortunately, it’s not something we did, but there’s nothing we can do. It’s just one of those things. It’s not an excuse, just something I have to get on top of.”

In response to these challenges, Red Bull has decided to replace Lawson with Yuki Tsunoda, who previously showed his interest in being a part of Red Bull in the upcoming Japanese GP. He said, “Yeah, why not? Always. In Japan? Yeah, 100%. I mean, the car is faster.”

Tsunoda brings four years of experience from Racing Bulls, which could prove to be beneficial for the RB21 car. His familiarity with the team and his racing background will help Red Bull overcome the challenges they faced early in the season.

His future in the team remains somewhat uncertain, given the team’s reputation for changing drivers, with Honda set to switch its partnership to Aston Martin in 2026, questions about his long-term career at Red Bull remain a subject of debate.
