Rhythm Sangwan Clinches Bronze, Secures Historic 16th Olympic Quota for India in Shooting
Read about Rhythm Sangwan’s historic feat, securing India’s 16th Olympic quota in shooting with a brilliant bronze in the women’s 25m pistol at the Asian Olympic Qualification.
In a historic achievement, Rhythm Sangwan etched her name in India’s shooting legacy by securing the nation’s record-breaking 16th Olympic quota place with a bronze medal in the women’s 25m pistol category at the Asian Olympic Qualification on Thursday.
At just 20 years old, Rhythm demonstrated exceptional skill, scoring 28 points to claim the third spot. China’s Yang Jiin clinched the gold with a score of 41, while Korea’s Kim Yeji secured second place with 32 points.
This accomplishment marks India’s highest-ever number of quota places, surpassing the 15 quotas won in the last Tokyo Olympics and the 12 secured during the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
The allocation of quotas is crucial, and the top two shooters in each category, provided they meet eligibility criteria and their countries haven’t fulfilled their quota allocation, secure quotas for their respective nations.
In this instance, since South Korea had already secured two quotas in the women’s 25m pistol from previous qualifying events, the additional quotas were awarded to India and Chinese Taipei’s Chia Ying Wu.
Rhythm Sangwan’s stellar performance not only secured India’s maximum number of quotas in this event but also added to the success achieved by Manu Bhaker, who had won the other quota last year.
The Jakarta event has proven to be fruitful for India, as they have now secured three quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics through the outstanding performances of Varun Tomar, Esha Singh, and Rhythm Sangwan.
