Indian fast bowler Prasidh Krishna created a special record against Afghanistan and made a significant impact in the third ODI played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday(20/06/2026). The Afghanistan captain won the toss and chose to bat first but lost a wicket on the very first ball of the innings. The right-arm pacer dismissed in-form opening batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz, with Rohit Sharma taking his catch at slip. Prasidh put Afghanistan under pressure during his first spell and picked up four wickets. He finished his spell with impressive figures of 5 wickets for 23 runs in 10 overs. Krishna created special record alongside Rohit Sharma, and it occurred for the third time in Indian cricket history.
Rohit Sharma and Prasidh Krishna made special record
After 1,078 ODI matches, a bowler-fielder combination created a unique record for India. Rohit Sharma and Prasidh Krishna etched their names into the record books during the third ODI against Afghanistan.
There have been previous instances in Indian cricket where a bowler has claimed three wickets with the same fielder taking the catches. However, Rohit and Prasidh became only the third such bowler-fielder pair in India’s ODI history to achieve the feat. Let’s take a look at the list:
- VVS Laxman off Irfan Pathan vs Zimbabwe, Perth – 2004
- Shikhar Dhawan off Jasprit Bumrah vs Bangladesh, Dubai – 2018
- Rohit Sharma off Prasidh Krishna vs Afghanistan, Chennai – 2026
What makes Rohit and Prasidh’s achievement even more special is that all three dismissals came in succession and accounted for Afghanistan’s first three wickets of the innings, a first in Indian ODI cricket.
Afghanistan Struggles in the begining
Afghanistan found themselves in deep trouble early on, but captain Hashmatullah Shahidi led a spirited fightback. The left-hander stitched together a crucial 105-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Azmatullah Omarzai, who contributed a fluent 50 off 56 balls. Shahidi then added another valuable 57 runs for the sixth wicket alongside the experienced Mohammad Nabi.
Before Afghanistan’s recovery began, Prasidh Krishna was the standout performer for India. The pacer bowled with excellent control, consistently pitching the ball up and drawing the batters into risky drives.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah all fell in similar fashion, edging Prasidh to Rohit Sharma at first slip. The trio of catches created a unique record. It was only the third instance in India’s ODI history where a fielder took three catches off the same bowler. Previously, VVS Laxman had done it off Irfan Pathan against Zimbabwe in 2004, while Virat Kohli achieved the feat off Jasprit Bumrah against Bangladesh in 2018.
Rohit and Prasidh duo scripted history
What made Rohit and Prasidh’s effort even more remarkable was that they became the first bowler-fielder pair in ODI history for India to combine for the first three wickets of an innings, all in consecutive fashion. Prasidh continued his impressive spell when Darwish Rasooli attempted a pull shot, only for Shreyas Iyer to sprint in from mid-off and complete a superb catch. The wicket gave Prasidh his fourth scalp inside the first 10 overs.
The Karnataka fast bowler also joined an elite group featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Javagal Srinath and Mohammed Siraj by achieving four wickets within the opening 10 overs of an ODI innings.
At 36 for 4, Afghanistan looked set for a collapse. However, Shahidi and Omarzai showed great resilience, rebuilding the innings and keeping the scoreboard moving at a healthy rate.
Shahidi played the anchor’s role brilliantly, using late cuts and soft hands to find gaps and bring up his half-century in 64 balls. Omarzai, on the other hand, took a more aggressive route. His fifty came off 55 deliveries and included towering sixes against Harsh Dubey and Washington Sundar. The partnership was finally broken when Omarzai mistimed a pull shot off Prince Yadav and was caught by Prasidh at long leg.
Afghanistan Posted 218 run on boards
Despite battling cramps after crossing 80, Shahidi carried on with determination. He reached his maiden ODI century in 128 balls, bringing up the milestone with a trademark late cut for four off Washington Sundar. Once Nabi departed, wickets began to tumble at the other end, leaving Shahidi to battle almost alone. Digging deep and pushing through the pain, he guided Afghanistan beyond the 200-run mark. Afghanistan’s total received a slight boost when India were awarded a five-run penalty after Shahidi ran through the protected area of the pitch on the final ball of the 39th over.
