Sporting CP delivered one of the most dramatic turnarounds of this season’s Champions League, overturning a three goal first leg deficit to knock out Bodø/Glimt and secure a 5 3 aggregate win in their round of 16 clash.

Heading into the second leg after a heavy 3 0 defeat in Norway, Sporting needed a near perfect performance and they delivered just that. From the opening whistle, the Portuguese side played with urgency and intent, constantly pushing forward and putting Bodø under pressure. They created a flurry of chances early on but initially lacked the finishing touch, with several opportunities going narrowly wide or being denied.

Norwegian fairytale ends in Champions League

Their persistence finally paid off in the 34th minute when Gonçalo Inácio rose to head in a well placed corner from Francisco Trincão. The goal injected even more belief into the team and the crowd, who played a crucial role in maintaining the intensity inside the stadium.

Despite their dominance, Sporting had a scare before halftime when Odin Bjørtuft struck the crossbar with a powerful header. However, the momentum remained with the home side. In the 61st minute, Pedro Gonçalves doubled the lead with a composed finish after a precise delivery from Luis Suárez.

The comeback was fully alive when Sporting were awarded a penalty in the 78th minute following a VAR review. Suárez stepped up and calmly converted, levelling the tie on aggregate and sending the match into extra time as the stadium erupted.

Sporting wasted no time taking control in the added period. Just moments after kickoff, Maxi Araújo found the net to give his side the aggregate lead for the first time in the tie. With Bodø struggling to respond both physically and mentally, substitute Rafael Nel added a fifth goal late on, sealing an unforgettable night.

Bodø/Glimt’s journey in the competition had been nothing short of remarkable, with impressive wins over major European sides earlier in the tournament. However, their fairytale run came to an end against a relentless Sporting side backed by a roaring home crowd.

In the end, it was a performance built on belief, intensity, and clinical finishing, one that will be remembered as a classic Champions League comeback.
