The Asian Hockey Federation stated that the ninth Men’s Junior Asia Cup, which had been postponed twice because of Covid-19, will now take place in Oman from May 23 to June 1. (AHF).
For the top three placing teams, the competition will also be a means of securing a straight entry into the Junior World Cup in 2023.
According to Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Secretary Haider Hussain, 30-35 likely candidates for the Junior Asia Cup training camp will be revealed following the under-20 Qalandars championship, which is slated for Ramadan.
Players who are already active on the national circuit as well as those discovered during the under-20 tournament will be included in the probables, according to Haider.
The Junior Asia Cup is crucial for Pakistan because it opens the door to a straight entry into the Junior World Cup, according to Haider.
It is important to note that Pakistan missed the most recent junior world cups in 2016 and 2021.
They were not eligible in 2016, and the later visa issue caused difficulty.
The Junior Asia Cup and the World Cup are both well under way, Haider continued.
PHF wants Greenshirts to play some international competition before the Asia Cup.
In order to organise a test series for that reason, we are in communication with the Malaysian Hockey Federation, Haider stated.
Participants in the Junior Asia Cup must have been born on January 1, 2002, or later and be 21 years of age or under.
Players who have already been chosen by PHF for the Asia Cup have been sent to the senior team’s training camp to get in some competitive work.
There are 10 teams competing in the continental championship: Bangladesh, Chinese Taipei, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, Thailand, and Uzbekistan.
