With this knock, Tilak Varma became the second youngest batter to score a century in the shortest format of the game for the Indian cricket team. All thanks to his stunning knock, Tilak Varma won the Player of the Match award.
A day after the Indian cricket team won the third T20I match by 11 runs to take a lead of 2-1 in the series, BCCI took to its social media handles and shared a video of Tilak Varma expressing his happiness over scoring his maiden T20I century. Speaking in the video, Tilak Varma said:
“I scored 100 in the centurion today. I am very, very happy. I had a dream that in Centurion, a boy with long hair will score a century,” Tilak said in the video.
Tilak Varma further revealed that people were saying that it will be difficult for him to make a comeback after missing the last few series because of injuries. He said:
“I recently got injured and couldn’t play in some series. People were saying that it will be difficult for me to make a comeback in the Indian team because I have missed 2-3 series. I believe in God. I will get a chance at the right time, and I will score runs at the right time. That’s why I looked at God after the 100.”
Tilak revealed his conversation with Suryakumar Yadav
Tilak also revealed that Suryakumar Yadav had come to his room ahead of the 3rd T20I and informed him that he would bat at No.3. He revealed that the Indian skipper told him to go out and make most of the opportunity. He revealed:
“It was for Suryakumar, our captain. He has given me opportunity to bat at No.3. Because I love to bat at that spot, and last 2 matches I batted at No.4. But before this match, he came to my room and said that ‘you’re going to bat at No.3. It’s a good opportunity, so express yourself.'”
He revealed how he promised SKY that he will give his best and hence he decided to dedicate his century to him. He revealed:
“I told him that I got a good opportunity and couldn’t perform. So I will perform and show on the ground. So that’s why I pointed the bat to him.”
Surya hailed Tilak for his brilliant knock
Meanwhile, in the post-match presentation, Suryakumar Yadav revealed it was Tilak Varma who had suggested his own promotion. He said:
“What can I say about Tilak Varma. It’s a big deal to have so much clarity and aggression at such a young age. He came to me (in Gqeberha), asked me if he could bat at three. I said to him it was his day and to enjoy himself,” Yadav said.
He added, “I knew what he was capable of doing and very happy for him.”
