Timo Werner scores a brace as Germany defeat North Macedonia

Timo Werner scored two sublime goals in the second half to help Germany win 4-0 against North Macedonia. With this win, Germany also qualified for the Qatar World Cup scheduled for next June.

The first half ended 0-0 after Germany managed to create only half chances. Macedonia rarely broke out but never managed to capitalize on its counter-attacking opportunities.

Germany made a breakthrough in the 50th minute via Kai Havertz.

The Chelsea forward was released in behind by Thomas Muller to give Germany the lead. Timo Werner doubled the lead in the 70th minute. Muller again was the provider after releasing Werner using one of his unusual techniques. The Chelsea striker made no mistake in putting the ball into the back of the net.

Timo Werner scored his second goal of the night three minutes later with a sublime curling effort from just inside the penalty area.

Jamal Musiala added a fourth goal in the 83rd minute after a brilliant dash towards the penalty area. Musiala’s goal was his first in international football. The Bayern Munich attacking midfielder becomes the second-youngest German to score for the national team. Marius Hiller holds the record scoring his first goal as a 17-year-old against Switzerland in 1910. However, Musiala holds the record for being the youngest goalscorer for Germany in a competitive match.

Germany went into their match in Skopje knowing that they could qualify for the World Cup if they win and Armenia fail to beat Romania.

Meanwhile, Hansi Flick complimented his side saying:

“We have now won five out of five games this season. You have to compliment the team for their attitude. Of course, the first half was a bit wild. But we can be happy that we won and qualified”
