“The Tonypandy Terror” was the moniker given to Welsh fighter Thomas George (Tommy) Farr, who was from Clydach Vale, Rhondda. Prior to 1936, Farr competed in boxing as the Welsh champion in the light heavyweight class. On March 15, 1937, he was crowned the heavyweight champion of the British Empire. In the same year that he challenged Joe Louis for the world title, he gave Louis one of the most difficult fights of his career, hurting him repeatedly and going the full 15 rounds before losing by a wide margin of unanimous decision. The referee gave Louis the fight thirteen rounds to one, while the judges gave Louis scores of eight to five and nine to six, both in his favor.
