Uncovering the Most Underrated NFL Players in History

5 Min Read

The NFL is a league dominated by stars. While some players continue to rise to popularity and receive league-wide acclaim, others receive less attention, frequently going unnoticed for several seasons or even their whole careers. In this article we will take a closer look at the top five such underrated players in the NFL who haven’t been acknowledged enough for their talent and skill set,

  • Tony Pollard

Tony Pollard, one of the NFL’s undervalued players in 2022, has progressively improved over the course of his first few seasons. When you’re Ezekiel Elliott’s backup, it’s challenging to stop that from happening. However, Pollard is beginning to take more playing time away from Elliott after averaging 5.5 yards per carry and carrying for more than 700 yards the previous season. However, one may contend that Pollard still doesn’t receive enough touches. He’s averaging 5.6 yards per rush after seven games, which is far more than Elliott’s 4.1-yard average. It demonstrates Pollard’s progress despite the fact that his efforts have not received due recognition.

  • A.J. Terrell

A.J. Terrell would probably be much better renowned as one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks if he hadn’t played for the Falcons. Due to his three interceptions and 16 passes defended in 2021, even after only two years in the league, he is already rated as one of the top corners in the league. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, the Falcons still lack a strong defensive unit. Early in the 2022 season, he hasn’t slowed down because Terrell is still a top-tier cornerback. Terrell, however, continues to go unnoticed and unappreciated since the Atlanta defense has had a difficult season.

  • Ed Oliver

Ed Oliver is able to go unnoticed and be a little undervalued since the Bills have a lot of quality players on one of the finest defenses in the NFL. The defensive players on the edges of the field naturally receive the most of the attention in today’s game. Oliver, for example, does the grunt labor in the trenches in the meanwhile. In his case, he was selected in the top 10 just as the Bills began to see success. Oliver doesn’t have a particularly impressive stat line; he only registered 12 sacks in his first three seasons in the league. He will, though, unexpectedly make a big play at crucial times to highlight how crucial he is to Buffalo’s defense.

  • Darnell Mooney

Hopefully, Darnell Mooney won’t remain unappreciated for too long. But even a 1,000-yard season in 2021 while playing for a poor Chicago offense wasn’t enough to bring him any attention. The player in question was selected in the fifth round of the 2020 draft. With the Bears being a problematic offensive team in recent years, there wasn’t much anticipation for him coming out of Tulane. Mooney has been Chicago’s top receiver all season long, and that has continued this year. Mooney’s stats will increase and he won’t be as underappreciated as he is today if Justin Fields improves as a passer.

  • AJ Dillon

The Packers have had a dismal season, but AJ Dillon keeps producing despite going unnoticed. Of course, Aaron Jones is the Green Bay backfield player who draws the most attention. But Dillon needs to be treated equally with Jones because he is much more than just a backup running back. Fair enough, Dillon hasn’t quite reached the same level as a pass-catcher, but he did get better at it last year. Jones and Dillon are finally sharing the carries in the early part of the season. More people would understand how crucial Dillon is to the Green Bay offense if the Packers could just improve their wide receiver options and start performing to their full potential.
