No matter where he plays, Team India’s star batter Virat Kohli has a large fan base. Since Kohli is the team’s designated number four batter, the crowd in Test matches typically erupts in raucous applause as soon as India’s second wicket in an innings falls. Chants of “Kohli, Kohli” are heard as the India star approaches the crease. But on Friday, the 34-year-old batter was greeted with thunderous applause as he emerged from the locker room after merely taking some batting practise.
Even as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, the two Indian openers, were batting at the crease, Kohli made his way towards the dugout. The Indian star appeared to be practising his batting because he was holding a bat in his left hand. The stadium was filled with chants of Kohli’s name as soon as he started to walk through the corridor leading from the dressing room to the playing field.

While Kohli made a fantastic comeback to form in the limited-overs formats last year, he has yet to carry the run-scoring streak over to Test cricket. Kohli has 111 runs in his first three Border-Gavaskar Trophy games. The star Indian batter will aim to take advantage of Ahmedabad’s pitch conditions, which are notably in favour of the batters, and break the three-figure deadlock in the longest format.
In a Test match against Bangladesh in November 2019, Kohli scored his last century.
Both of India’s openers were still unbeaten at the end of Day 2 of the fourth Test, indicating that they have commenced their first innings with poise. Usman Khawaja (180) and Cameron Green (114) both scored centuries as Australia posted a solid total of 480 in the first innings, leaving the team with a score of 36/0. In the longest format, Ravichandran Ashwin took 32 five-wicket hauls for India, finishing with stats of 6/91.
Ashwin also surpassed legendary Indian bowler Anil Kumble in terms of the number of five-wicket hauls they have recorded at home (26).
