Due to long-term goals, former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer believes that Indian team management should consider all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer. The Rohit Sharma-led team secured the T20I series with an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series with an eight-run victory against West Indies in the second T20I encounter on Friday.

Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, who had failed to score runs in the first encounter, responded with fast half-centuries to help India record 186/5 in the first innings. Pant stayed undefeated on 52 off 28 balls, and he had a 76-run partnership with Venkatesh Iyer, who scored 33 off 18 balls. Iyer got off to a good start with a boundary off Roston Chase’s flatter ball, which he fetched via an inside edge. In the 16th over, the lanky player hammered Sheldon Cottrell for consecutive fours. Iyer clobbered West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder for a six over deep mid-wicket, smashing four boundaries and a six before Romario Shepherd shattered his stumps in the penultimate over of India’s innings.

Jaffer believes that not only should the Madhya Pradesh player be given more opportunities in the shorter format, but that he should also be given a long rope in ODI cricket.
