Young Gun Ayush Mhatre Impresses CSK
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has long been known for giving young cricketers a platform to showcase their skills, and 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre from Mumbai is one such player making waves. His impressive performances on the field have caught the eye of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) scouts, and even MS Dhoni is reportedly keen to see more of the talented young opener.
CSK is said to have shown interest in Mhatre and has invited him to attend trials later this month. These trials are scheduled during the break between the Ranji Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which runs from November 16 to November 23, 2024. CSK’s Managing Director, Kasi Viswanath, has already contacted the Mumbai Cricket Association for approval for Mhatre to join the trials.
Let’s take a look at some interesting facts about this rising star:
Ayush Mhatre’s cricketing journey began at the age of five, and he would travel a long distance of 80 km one way by train. He made the journey from Virar, a suburb of Mumbai, to Churchgate to practice at the renowned maidans near Wankhede Stadium. His parents, along with his maternal grandfather and later his uncle, supported him throughout his journey, accompanying him on these long trips so he could pursue his dreams.
Mhatre made his debut in first-class cricket during the 2024 Irani Cup match between Mumbai and the Rest of India (ROI). In his debut inning, he scored 19 runs, while Sarfaraz Khan’s massive unbeaten 222 took the limelight. Mumbai won the match, claiming the Irani Cup title after 27 years.
In his Ranji Trophy debut, Mhatre played against Baroda and scored a half-century, making 52 runs off 71 balls in the first inning. Although Mumbai lost the match, Mhatre’s performance in his first appearance on the big stage was noteworthy.
In his second Ranji Trophy match, Ayush Mhatre took his game to the next level, scoring a brilliant 176 against Maharashtra. During his innings, he borrowed a bat from Prithvi Shaw, another cricketer from Virar, and scored his century with it. His strong performance led Mumbai to a nine-wicket victory.
Ayush Mhatre’s consistent performances have earned him a spot in the list of probables for Mumbai’s squad for the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. This list includes well-known players like Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane, and Mhatre’s inclusion reflects his growing stature in Indian cricket.
Ayush Mhatre’s journey is just beginning, but he has already made a name for himself with his hard work, dedication, and natural talent. As he continues to develop, there is no doubt that he will be one of the most exciting young players to watch in the future of Indian cricket.
