Formula 1 has always been a sport that accepts raw talent and pure willpower. Over the years, the grid has seen a bunch of teenagers hop into the fast cars and race for their lives. This indomitable human spirit also led them to a successful career to make their mark as the youngest debutants in Formula 1 history.
These prodigies not only rewrote the history books but also marked a new era in the racing world that still continues to inspire the next generation. In this article, we will take a look at the four youngest debutants in Formula 1.
4 Youngest Debutants in Formula 1

Max Verstappen: 17 years 5 months 15 days
When Max Verstappen lined up on the grid of the Australian Grand Prix 2015, he was just 17 years old, so young that he wasn’t even allowed to drive a car on the road legally in many countries. His debut sparked a debate across the paddock about whether he should even be allowed to race at such a high level. However, his talent was undeniable. He qualified 12th and was on course for the points before an engine failure ended his race.
In the very next outing, he was promoted to Red Bull Racing, where he won his very first race for the team in Spain, becoming the youngest debutants in Formula 1. Since then, he has shattered almost every record there is in F1 and has won the World Championship four times consecutively since 2021, and is also one of the strongest contenders for the 2025 season.
Lance Stroll: 18 years 4 months 26 days
Lance Stroll made his F1 debut for Williams at the Australian Grand Prix 2017, becoming one of the youngest debutants in Formula 1. He also had a successful junior career and significant financial support, and his entry was met with both anticipation and doubts.
He had a rocky start, with three retirements in the first three races, though he quickly silenced critics by securing a podium finish in Baku, Azerbaijan. This result made him the second youngest podium finisher in F1 history, a record that still stands strong today.

Oliver Bearman: 18 years 10 months 1 day
Oliver Bearman is the most recent addition to the list of youngest debutants in Formula 1 history. He grabbed the spotlight at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix 2024 as a last-minute replacement for Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. Despite minimal preparation, he qualified just outside of the top ten and finished with an impressive seventh.
His debut was especially remarkable given the situation. He was in his second year of F3 and had to withdraw from that weekend’s F2 feature race after claiming pole position.

Jaime Alguersuari: 19 years 4 months 3 days
Before Verstappen, Stroll, and Bearman, it was Jaime who held the record for the youngest debutants in Formula 1. He made his debut with Toro Rosso at the Hungarian Grand Prix 2008, replacing Sebastian Bourdais mid-season. His transition to F1 was a huge leap, and his first race saw him qualify last and finish 15th. Despite promising talent, his career was short-lived as he left the racing world at the end of 2011 and retired at just the age of 25.
F1’s regulations have now changed, requiring drivers to be at least 18 years old to be able to compete. This makes Verstappen’s record most likely untouchable.
